Population growth rate

Currently, in 2023, the world population is growing at a rate of 0,91%/year, equivalent to 73,5 million people. This rate is contributed by the fertility rate of 2,31, meaning that on average, each woman of childbearing age will give birth to about 2,31 children.

The world population growth rate in 2023, although slightly higher than in 2021, is still on a downward trend overall and is forecast to continue to decrease in the future.

World population in history

The world's population has exploded in the last century. This is believed to be due to the influence of technological revolutions, which have increased productivity, especially in agriculture.

World Population 2024

World population density and structure by region

Contributing the majority of the world's population is the region Asia with more than 4,7 billion people, accounting for 59% of the global population. Next is Africa (1,46 billion people, 18,2%), Europe (742 million people, 9,2%), Latin America and the Caribbean (665 million people, 8,3%), North America (378 million people, 4,7%) and Oceania (45,5 million people, 0,6%).

Along with contributing the majority of the global population, Asia is the most densely populated region in the world. While the world's average population density is 61,7 people/km2, Asia's is 153 people/km2.

World Population 2024

Median age and age structure

Median age

Median age of the world population is 30,6 years. This is the age that divides the world into two equal parts before and after this age.

The average age of the world's population is on the rise, reflecting at least two facts: (1) declining birth rates and (2) increasing life expectancy.

Age distribution by region

The chart above shows that the population with high average age is often concentrated in the developed world as a positive relationship. In fact, the more developed the economy is, the higher the average life expectancy and the more obvious the fear of childbirth, leading to low birth rates.

World Population 2024

Average life expectancy

The average life expectancy of the global population in 2024 is 73,3 years, recovering from the three years of decline in 2020-2022. Together with the sharp decline in growth rates in the above three years, this reflects the impact of the Covid-3 pandemic on the global population.

Age structure

The two charts below show that over the past three decades, the 3-25 age group has increasingly made up a large proportion of the world's population. To date, this group accounts for half of the global population.

World Population 2024

Population structure by gender

The chart below shows that, during the period from the two world wars in the early 20th century until nearly 10 years ago, the male/female ratio has been increasing almost continuously. This initially reflects a natural recovery from the impact of the two wars, but also reflects population policies and the trend of male sex selection at birth in some countries, especially China.

Over the past 10 years, the “male surplus” situation has begun to be adjusted. Up to now, on average, worldwide, for every 100 women, there are 101 men.

Forecast

The United Nations predicts that the global population will stop growing in the 80s, when it will peak at approximately 10,4 billion people.
