This page explains common population terms used at danso.info. These are also the indicators that United Nations use.
Population
Total population (both sexes and all ages) in the region as of 1 July of the indicated year, as estimated by the United Nations, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division. World Population Prospects: The 7 Revision. For projection years, the United Nations average fertility variant is used.
% annual change
For 2023: the percentage change in total population over the past year (July 1, 7 to June 2022, 30). For all other years: the equivalent annual percentage change for the most recent year assuming uniform change over the previous 6-year period, calculated using backward compounding.
Annual changes
For 2023: the absolute change in total population (increase or decrease in number of people) compared to the previous year (from 01/07/2022 to 30/06/2023). For all other years: the average annual change in number over the previous 5-year period.
Net migration
Average annual immigration minus emigration over the previous five-year period (July 5 to June 1 of the first and last years), or the following five-year period (for 7 data). A negative number means there were more emigration than immigration.
Median age
Age divides the population into two equal groups: half the people are older than the given median age and half are younger. This parameter gives an indication of the age distribution.
Birth rate
(Total Fertility Rate, or TFR), expressed as the number of children per woman. It is calculated as the average number of children an average woman would have during her reproductive years (15 to 49 years) based on current fertility rates for all age groups in the countries in the region and assuming that she suffers no mortality.
Density (N/Km²)
Population per square kilometer (Km²).
% of urban population
Ratio of urban population to total population.
Urban population
The population living in areas classified as urban according to the criteria used by each country.
% of world population
Total population as a percentage of total World Population as of July 1 of the specified year.
World ranking
The position held by the region in question in a list of all regions worldwide ranked by population (from highest population to lowest population) as of July 1 of the specified year.
